Before You Hire a Moving Company

Uncategorized | April 29, 2011

Reading Time: 1 minute

Did you know you can get some basic, but important data on the moving company you may be considering using by visiting https://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_carrquery.prc_carrlist ? By clicking on the link, you’ll get a page that looks like this:

Licensing & Insurance Public Website

All you really need is the name of the moving company and the state of incorporation but, if you have the USDOT number (which you can request from the moving company), all the better! The site will generate a report which provides information as to whether the USDOT number is active (if not, watch out if they’re still operating those big moving vans) and some other good information including the name and address of their insurance carrier, how much insurance they are required to carry and other legal information, just in case you need it.
