A year ago, online learning was a term that you might have heard of, but never fully understood. Fast-forward to 2020 and there are schools all over the country starting this fall fully remote. So as a parent, it’s your job to set your child up for success whether they are doing full-time remote schooling or a hybrid option.

Luckily, parents aren’t alone in this uncharted territory. We’ve compiled a list of the best parenting tips for online learning to set your students up for success and minimal stress.

5 Tips to Online Learning for Kids

The most important thing when it comes to online learning for kids is to understand your role as a parent. The lines between parent and teacher can quickly become blurred so it’s important to establish an effective routine for learning at home. Use these parenting tips for online learning to help you navigate these uncharted waters.

  1. Create a Designated Learning Space – Whether that means saying goodbye to the man cave temporarily or finally getting around to cleaning out the spare bedroom, your child needs a dedicated, quiet, and clutter-free learning space. Just remember, it is only going to be temporary!
  2. Create a Schedule – And more importantly, stick to it! Have a designated start time and stop time for each school day. Have it clearly displayed what the expectations are for the day and make sure to build in time for physical activity. Color-coded calendars are also a great way to help your child stay on top of deadlines, schoolwork, and upcoming tasks.
  3. Maintain Open Lines of Communication – No matter the age of your child, it’s important to have a specific dialogue around school. You need to know if they are struggling with things, keeping up with their workload, and feeling comfortable with the new routine. It also helps to keep lines of communication going with your child’s teachers. This will ensure you are informed and actively participating in the virtual learning process.
  4. Limit Distractions – One of the biggest distractions to watch out for is having a TV in the room where your child will be learning. If your child is having a hard time staying off social media or playing games throughout the day, use parental controls on your computer to block sites that are distracting.
  5. Utilize School Resources – Many schools are offering educational resources to supplement online learning. This is especially important for students with an IEP or 504 plan that requires additional learning support at school.

As a parent, you want to do everything in your power to set your child up for success, but you have to remember it’s about the child and not the work. Every child is different, and you need to keep this in mind if your child struggles with certain concepts. First and foremost, you are their parent and you need to remember they need your love and support now more than ever.
