Family working together to prepare for moving day.
Spring is the most popular time of year to move. However, it’s also one of the most unpredictable. The weather changes daily and the surge in movers creates some challenges when it comes to scheduling out your move.

The best thing you can do to make your move go smoothly is to start planning early. It’s easy to procrastinate when you’re busy working, taking care of kids, and getting your finances in order. But to get the best deals on movers and equipment, it’s best to plan as far in advance as possible.

8 Tips for Moving in Spring

Below are eight tips on how to prepare for moving day and organize before a move:

  1. Transfer Your Utilities – Gather all your information for your utility companies and start closing out your accounts or getting them transferred to your new address. This can take some time, so it’s best to do it early.
  2. Plan Around the Weather – The weather in spring is unpredictable. Try to watch the weather forecasts and plan your move accordingly. The last thing you want to do is have all your furniture delivered in a rainstorm.
  3. Only Move What You Need – When packing, be sure to purge any items you don’t need in your new space. It’s best to do it now before you pack it up and move it to the new space. Create a pile to pack, a pile to trash and a pile to donate.
  4. Stay Organized – When packing, be sure to label every box and categorize things by season. Make sure all the spring clothes, jackets, boots and hats are easily accessible.
  5. Invest in Temporary Storage – If you’re moving in spring, it’s probably safe to put the snowblower, winter coats and shovel into temporary storage. By moving these things now, you’ll have less to move to your new space and avoid cluttering up your new garage with things you don’t need.
  6. Get the Family Involved – It’s easy to put the entire burden of moving on your shoulders, but enlisting your children to help pack, purge and plan is a great way to make the process fun and less stressful.
  7. Hire a Cleaner – While you might be trying to cut costs during your move, hiring a cleaner to get your new home ready before you arrive is well worth the additional cost. Your house will truly be move-in-ready.
  8. Create a Schedule – One of the best things you can do is create a calendar specifically for moving. Space out your priorities and tackle one item every day. This will make the process less intrusive in your everyday life and it will ensure you don’t procrastinate.

Moving in spring definitely has its complications, but it allows you and your family to get a fresh start and be settled before summer. Make your moving experience the best one possible by planning ahead and starting early.
