Now more than ever, people around the world are working remotely. While for some people this may not be a huge change, for others, the change is drastic. In order to stay in touch, many major companies are operating using video conference calls. Unless you currently have a picture-perfect office, the thought of sharing the background of your workspace can be intimidating! But we’re here to help. Learn how to get your office video conference ready below!

5 Tips for Setting Up a Home Office for Video Calls

  1. Evaluate the location: It’s important to keep in mind that where your office is currently located may actually not the best spot for it. Maybe your office is on the first floor facing an active street, or maybe your office is located near your kids’ playroom and can get a little noisy. Be prepared that you may need to move your office to a more ideal location. This may involve swapping a spare bedroom with your previous office space.
  2. Evaluate the background: Before your first video conference, it’s important to take into consideration your background. If your desk is facing the door to a busy hallway where your family is occasionally poking their heads in, consider moving your desk to a different location. The background of your workspace should be neat but not too personal.A great way to add personality to your background is by hanging art and adding in a standing houseplant.
  3. Put a sign on your door: The last thing you want during a meeting is for a family member to stop into the room to ask a question. To keep this from happening, add a sign to your door to be used when you’re in meetings.
  4. Check lighting: If your office doesn’t have good natural lighting, add lamps. The best angle for lamps is when the light bounces off of the wall and illuminates you, and not a lamp directly facing you. If your room is naturally well lit, you may be able to get away with just the light from windows. Never mix natural light with a lamp, as this can create a harsh contrast.
  5. Angle your webcam: The goal of a video conference is to feel like you’re all in the same space together. To make this happen, keep your webcam angled slightly above your eyeline. Additionally, it’s a good idea to move the video of other participants close to the webcam so it appears that you’re gazing at them when they’re speaking.

Have a Neater Home Office with a Storage Unit Rental

Realistically, there may be some items in your office that don’t look presentable enough for a work call, but you’re just not ready to get rid of them yet. Maybe it’s an old end table passed down from your mom, or maybe it’s boxes of odds and ends that have always been stored in this space. With a storage unit rental, you can easily clear these items out of your home, allowing you to have a neat and professional office space.
