A group of people practice safer ways to celebrate Thanksgiving by wearing masks at the dinner table.
During the coronavirus pandemic this year, Thanksgiving celebrations might look a little different. You might be wondering, what are safer Thanksgiving activities during COVID-19? While it might be hard to uphold your annual family traditions, there are still some safer ways you can spend time with loved ones this holiday season.

How to Celebrate Thanksgiving in 2020

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are a few safer ways to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate with people in your household only. However, if you do plan to see people outside of your household, here are ways you can make Thanksgiving safer:

  1. Wear a Mask. You should wear a mask that has two or more layers to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Make sure your mask covers your nose and mouth and that it fits securely under your chin. You should also ensure your mask is snug against the side of your face.
  2. Social Distance. Do your best to stay six feet apart from others while you are celebrating the holiday. This is especially important to consider if you’re going to be spending time with relatives who are a higher risk of becoming very sick.
  3. Wash Your Hands Frequently. Make sure that you are frequently washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and keep hand sanitizer with you when you’re unable to wash your hands.
  4. Have an Outdoor Meal. If possible, have your Thanksgiving celebration outdoors, the COVID-19 virus is less likely to spread when you are outdoors. You should also limit the number of guests that attend your celebration and have them bring their own food, drinks and utensils.
  5. Have a Virtual Thanksgiving Celebration. While these recommendations can help to minimize the risk of the virus, one of the safer ways to celebrate is by having a virtual celebration. Schedule a time to share a meal virtually with family members to avoid a large number of people gathering this holiday.
