Labor Day is a day meant to pay tribute to all of the contributions and achievements from American workers and is usually celebrated on the first Monday in September. Labor Day 2020 will occur on Monday, September 7 this year.

While Labor Day was originally meant to solely celebrate workers and their achievements, many Americans also associate Labor Day with the end of summer and typically celebrate with parties, picnics, fireworks, parades and other social events. With COVID-19 still lingering, it may not be safe to celebrate Labor Day like you normally would, but there are some safer ways you can still make the most out of the holiday.

4 Ways to Celebrate Labor Day in 2020 in Alexandria, VA

  1. Go to a Drive-In Movie. Drive-in movie theaters are a great, safe way to watch a film on the big screen with friends and family. Celebrate Labor Day by stopping by the Alexandria Drive-In Theatre to watch Back to the Future on Saturday, September 5. Masks are required at check-in and whenever you are outside your vehicle and you will have plenty of space to socially distance.
  2. Stop by an Outdoor Farmer’s Market. Start your Labor Day weekend off with a stop at The Carlyle Farmer’s Market. The market is free to the public and offers fresh produce, meats, foods and beverages for sale. You must wear a face mask and practice social distancing while you browse.
  3. Take a Scenic Walk or Hike. Every Sunday, Friends of Dyke Marsh organizers lead bird walks starting at 8 a.m. There is a walk scheduled for Sunday, September 6. The walks are led by experienced birders and give you a chance to celebrate the holiday by taking in some fresh air and enjoying nature.
  4. Take a Yoga & Mimosas Class. This is an outdoor, socially distanced, instructor-led yoga event hosted by the City of Alexandria. This is a recurring event, with one of the dates falling on September 5th. Celebrate the holiday by doing yoga and enjoying mimosas with friends.
