Safer Holiday Activities for College Students
There is no doubt that 2020 has been hard on everyone, but it has been especially challenging for college kids. Moving away from home for possibly the first time and then, in some instances, having to move back to begin remote learning has been difficult for a large majority of students. As we head into the winter months, it’s very important for individuals to be safe and to take proper precautions to help minimize their risk of getting or spreading COVID-19.

If you have students coming home for the holidays in 2020, you might be wondering how you can best keep them safe and entertained.

5 Safer Holiday Activities for College Students

Large group gatherings are just simply not a good idea this year. Making holiday parties and restaurants unsafe for your college kids. Here are some safer alternative ways to celebrate the holidays this year:

  1. Zoom Happy Hours – One of the best things about the holiday season is getting together with friends for some drinks and good food. While it’s not exactly the same, you can help your college-age children create at-home cocktails (or mocktails) and appetizers to have a happy hour with friends virtually.
  2. Outdoor Fire Pits – Many restaurants, bars and even some houses are investing in heat lamps, socially distant igloos and fire pits to keep people outdoors even when the weather cools down. This is a great option to maintain 6-feet distance and still allow your college children to see their friends safely.
  3. Consider Testing – It’s a good idea to have college kids get a COVID test once they return home from their campus. While this is not a foolproof method, having your children get tested is a good way to help them see friends in a safe way.
  4. DriveThru Festivities – Many communities are getting creative with drive-in movies, drive-thru Christmas light displays and other options that allow individuals to socially distance, while still having fun together.
  5. Give Them Space – One of the best ways to keep your college-age kids safe is by giving them their own space within your home to call friends, Facetime and study. This is the best way to give them the freedom they need when they can’t go out with friends.
