Congressional Country Club Golf Tournament
The Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland is playing host to the tournament this year. Congressional Country Club was founded in 1924 and has had former presidents, diplomats and industrial leaders as its president. Congressional has hosted many national championships on the famous Blue Course including the 1959 U. S. Women’s Amateur Championship, 1995 Senior Open, and many U.S. Open tournaments including the 2011 U.S. Open Championship. The Blue Course was originally designed by well-known golf course designer, Deveraux Emmett with many upgrade and renovations over the years. The most recent upgrade was in 1995 by Rees Jones in preparation for the U.S. Open.
Tiger Woods is returning to play in the 2014 Quicken Loans Golf Tournament because it is a major fund and awareness raising event for the Tiger Woods Foundation. The organization helps underserved youth gain access to college. The organization sponsors the Earl Woods scholarship program and has two Tiger Woods Learning Centers (for grades 5-12 ) campuses located in Washington D.C. There have been 25 scholarship recipients in the D.C. area since the program started in 1996.
The armed forces are honored during the Quicken Loans National. The Tiger Woods Foundation, in conjunction with the OSD/JS Welfare & Recreation Association, is distributing free tickets to military personnel within the immediate Washington D.C. area. There will also be a performance by the U.S. Army Chorus Quartet and Joint Services Guard on July 25th to open the tournament. During the tournament, there are a few different ways to celebrate our armed forces: on the 17th hole, there will be a special military viewing pavilion and near the 18th hole, there will be a tribute to our armed services wall.
