Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. On this day, we spend time having cookouts, bonfires and attending parades honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country. Washington, DC is a hot bed for Memorial Day celebrations. If you live in the Washington, DC area, consider attending one of these events to honor those that served our country.

Sunday, May 27th Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day Flowers

On both Sunday, May 27th and Monday, May 28th, volunteers are needed to place flowers on graves in Arlington National Cemetery. If you’re unable to volunteer, consider donating to this event. A donation of 10 dollars will put roses on 12 graves.

Rolling Thunder Washington, DC, Inc.

The Rolling Thunder Washington, DC Inc. began in 1987 as a protest after the Vietnam War era. Vietnam veteran, Ray Manzo, was troubled by the number of prisoners left behind and MIA soldiers and sought to create a demonstration to raise awareness about the problem. The Rolling Thunder Demonstration Run is scheduled for noon on Sunday, May 27th.

National Memorial Day Choral Festival

The National Memorial Day Choral Festival started in 2008 as a way to attract more attention to the true meaning of Memorial Day. At this event, choirs from all across the United States gather to pay their respects and remember our fallen heroes. The concert will take place on Sunday, May 27th at 3:00 PM.

National Memorial Day Concert

On Sunday, May 27th, visit the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol for a star-studded concert in honor of those who are currently fighting for our country, their families, and those who gave their lives serving our country. The concert will be live streamed on PBS. Attendance to the concert is free, but concert-goers are advised to arrive as early as possible in order to get the best seats.

Memorial Day Events in Washington, DC

National Memorial Day Parade

The National Memorial Day Parade is held annually to honor those who served, gave the ultimate sacrifice or are serving right now. This parade is the largest of its kind in the Unites States with hundreds of thousands of spectators expected. The parade is scheduled for 2:00 PM this year. Attendees are advised to arrive early to get the best viewing.
