There are many Maryland county fairs throughout the state, but the biggest fair of the year is the Maryland State Fair. The Maryland State Fair 2015  opens at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium on Friday, August 28th and runs through Labor Day, September 7th.  There are concerts, entertainment, agricultural exhibitions, thoroughbred horse racing, carnival rides and much more for all ages over the 11 days of the Maryland State Fair.

Maryland State Fair Concerts and Events

The Maryland State Fair has multiple stages throughout the fairgrounds for entertainment and attractions. Most of the entertainment is free with admission and includes local and regional bands and cover bands. However there are a few concerts on the Racetrack Infield that require an additional fee. These include R5 and Bea Miller on September 4th, Fifth Harmony on September 5th and the Latino Music Festival on September 6th.

There are many events for the entire family at the Maryland State Fair 2015. Check the daily calendar for specific dates and times of the events. There will be bull riding and barrel racing demonstrations, a sand sculpture competition, pony races, live thoroughbred horse racing and of course agricultural exhibits. There are daily pig races and don’t miss a visit to goat mountain to see goats in their natural habitat! The Maryland State Fair is celebrating the Baltimore Ravens with Ravens Day September 2nd to 4th. You can meet former players, cheerleaders and cheer on the team during a large viewing party of their last pre-season game.  The Maryland State Fair has exciting carnival rides and amazing fair foods.

Agricultural events have always been the basis for the Maryland State Fair. The fair offers two types of livestock events: 4-H Club competition and an open class livestock competition, which is opened to any participant in the state. These competitions involve everything from home arts (baking, floral arrangements, quilting) to farm and garden to horses, cows and other livestock. The daily agriculture activities, competitions and events are listed on the agriculture schedule of events.

The Maryland State Fairgrounds

The Timonium Fairgrounds has been the home of The Maryland State Fair since the late 1800’s. The fair can be traced back to 1831, when Amon Bosley constructed a one mile horse racing track in the Lutherville/Timonium area. Various competing fairs and gatherings were held for the next 45 years until a committee, called the Agricultural Society of Baltimore County, purchased a 37 acre plot of land in Timonium to specifically hold a fair. The first fair was opened in 1879. In 1906, the Agricultural Society of Baltimore County Fair and the Pimlico Fair combined to form the Maryland State Fair. The fair ran continuously until 1942, when it was paused for the duration of World War II. The fair resumed in 1946. Today, the Maryland State Fairgrounds have increased to 100 acres with multiple buildings such as the 4-H/Home Arts Building, Cow Palace, Exhibition Hall, the race track grandstand and more. The fairgrounds is home to many festivals and exhibitions throughout the year.
