Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemorates the life, lessons and accomplishments of the civil rights leader. In 1986, Congress designated the third Monday of January as a federal holiday honoring Dr. King. There are many Martin Luther King Jr. events, including parades, lectures, and concerts, taking place in the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas this weekend.

National Day of Service

In 1994, Congress transformed the Martin Luther King Jr. Day into a National Day of Service. Volunteers across the country participate in community service activities such as cleaning and painting school buildings and community centers, building homes, delivering community meals, working in a food pantry, or tutoring children. Hundreds of thousands of people participated in National Day of Service activities in 2015 organized by national, regional and local groups.
