Organized home garage portraying the best organization strategies.
Spring cleaning isn’t just for rooms in your house. Over the winter months, your garage becomes a catch-all for shovels, snow boots, sleds, salt and other miscellaneous items. Spring is the perfect opportunity to make a fresh start in your garage by decluttering.

All it takes is one afternoon, and you can take your garage from a chaotic mess to a totally organized, useable space.

4 Garage Organization Strategies

Before you dive into the decluttering process, make sure you have the right tools on-hand. Equip yourself with heavy-duty trash bags, a vacuum or broom and large baskets to keep odds and ends organized. Once you’re ready to get started, here are some decluttering your garage tips to follow:

  1. Create a Toss Pile – If you’re looking to create space, the best thing you can do is throw out items you no longer need. The easiest place to start is with trash. Old cardboard boxes, newspapers, and dirty rags can go straight into the trash. Make sure to go through old cans of paint, expired cleaning supplies and outgrown toys, too.
  2. Create Specified Zones – Because the garage is home to so many different types of items, it can often get confusing when creating organization. Focus on creating logical zones of things like car supplies, sports equipment, outdoor toys, tools and gardening utensils. Think of your garage as a big box store and decluttering will be much easier.
  3. Invest in Storage – Catch-all bins are great for small toys, gardening supplies and tools, but when it comes to larger items, you might want to invest in hooks, shelving or cabinets. Consider adding locks to cabinets that will store items that need to stay out of reach to children.
  4. Invest in Short-Term Storage – Even when you do your best to declutter, there are still often items that might not fit into your garage. In spring, it might make sense to invest in short-term storage solutions to keep your snow blower, sleds and other winter gear protected and out of the way.

So, how can you keep your garage organized all year round? Consider doing monthly check-ins to make sure belongings aren’t getting out of place. Sweep out the garage and stay on top of any trash that might be piling up. A good rule of thumb is to go through the process of reorganizing your garage once or twice a year.
