Woman suffering from indoor allergy symptoms in spring.
Spring brings with it more than just warmer weather and beautiful flowers. The season also brings a lot of sneezing, wheezing and watering eyes for those who suffer from allergies. When your allergies flare up, you could be dealing with symptoms ranging from a runny nose to more severe complications such as difficulty breathing. While it might be your first reaction to avoid outdoor time, the inside of your home could actually be the bigger issue.

Take steps to remove indoor allergens from your home this spring and start breathing a little better.

10 Ways to Reduce Indoor Allergens

Maintaining a clean home is one of the most important aspects of reducing indoor allergens. Sometimes, it can be hard to keep up with household maintenance, especially if you have pets. Below are some other strategies for allergy prevention in your home:

  1. Keep the Floors Clean – Outdoor allergens are often brought into the home on pet’s feet. Keep carpets vacuumed and floors washed as often as possible.
  2. Swap Out Filters – Proper ventilation is key to removing airborne allergens from your home. Check both your furnace and air conditioner filters seasonally and consider swapping to HEPA air filters if you aren’t already using them.
  3. Dust Often – When you have windows open, airborne allergens can land on furniture and countertops. Dust often to keep surfaces clean.
  4. Wash Bedding – Microscopic dust mites can burrow in your bedding without you even realizing it. Wash your bedding seasonally to prevent allergic reactions.
  5. Clean Curtains and Blinds – While you can’t do this all the time, it’s important in spring to clean curtains and dust all blinds to make sure allergens aren’t making their way into your home.
  6. Bathe Your Pet – Pet hair and dander are large contributors to dust. By washing your pet and brushing their hair, you can eliminate some of these allergens from getting in your house and on your furniture.
  1. Clean Out Your Fridge – Refrigerators are a breeding ground for mold. Make sure you regularly clean out your drawers and eliminate any expired food.
  2. Invest in New Pillows – Over time, your pillows can collect dust mites, dead skin particles and other airborne allergens. Washing your pillows and replacing them annually is a good practice.
  3. Clean Your Vents – Your vents are blowing air into your home all winter and summer. Make sure you get them cleaned regularly to remove pet hair, dust and other allergens.
  4. Declutter – Believe it or not, your clutter could be causing some of your allergy issues. Discard items that are collecting dust in cabinets, drawers and toy boxes.
