Moving Tips
Northern Virginia is the region comprised of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties, spreading south and west of Washington, D.C. It’s the most populated area of the state, with more than 2.8 million residents living in cities like Alexandria, Chantilly, Fairfax, Tysons Corner, Arlington, Falls Church, Manassas and many others. If you’re planning on moving to Northern VA, you’ll also be moving to an economic hub full of diverse, vibrant communities and some of the nation’s most important national landmarks and institutions.

Moving to Northern VA

When relocating to Northern VA, it’s important to know a bit about the area and the people who live there. First of all, if you like the seasons, you will love Northern Virginia. Spring generally hits in March with the blooming of the cherry blossoms, with hot and humid summers through the beginning of October when the leaves on our maple and oak trees start changing color. While a lot of snowfall isn’t very common, winters do tend to get quite chilly and a snowstorm isn’t entirely out of the question!

Moving to Virginia means you will meet a very diverse group of people with careers in a wide variety of fields. Of course, due to the close proximity to D.C., there are plenty of government workers living in the area. Northern, VA is also home to some of the best hospitals, universities, technology, hospitality and real estate industries in the state, as well, just to name a few.

The population in Virginia has been on the rise for the past several years, jumping over 16 percent since the year 2000. Cost of living does tend to be slightly higher than the rest of the country, so be prepared to spend a bit more on your monthly rent or mortgage payment. However, the region truly has something for everyone in the family, no matter where your interests lie. From an entire network of Smithsonian museums and historical sites to visit, to great shopping and outdoor activities to enjoy, you’ll always find something to do in Northern Virginia!

How to Get Around Northern VA

As you plan your relocation to Northern Virginia, it’s also vital that you know how to get around the area. The high population in the region means rush hour traffic tends to be a hot topic, and some highways have restricted HOV lanes purely for carpooling. However, don’t let that deter you from relocating to Northern VA! The public transportation systems are continuing to expand and offer another option for getting around. For example, the Metrorail System has lines traveling through Arlington out to Vienna, as well as from Reagan National Airport to Alexandria and Springfield. Other forms of public transportation include several bus lines and the Virginia Rail Express.

Finding Moving Companies in Northern VA

While moving days are always somewhat stressful, with the proper planning, moving to Northern VA doesn’t have to be so overwhelming. Some tips for a successful moving day include getting a jumpstart on your packing, labeling all your boxes and keeping an inventory of all your belongings. Another great tip is to research moving companies in Northern VA as soon as possible, and book your professional movers or rental truck well in advance of moving day.
