During the summer months, it’s common to take vacations and trips with family members and friends. While this year vacations and family outings may look a little different, it doesn’t mean they can’t be a good time. Find a list of fun camping and hiking trips near the Washington, D.C. area!
Shenandoah National Park is located about an hour and a half from Washington, DC. This park encompasses part of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. This park is known for Skyline Drive, a 105-mile road that travels the length of the park. This road has incredible views! Inside of Shenandoah National Park, there’s also 500 miles of trails inside of the park to hike.
Harper’s Ferry National Park has beautiful views of the mountains, of the rivers and 20 miles of trails. The trails at this park range from easy to more strenuous. If you’re a fan of Civil War history, this is a great park for you. Some of the most popular trails at Harper Ferry National Park are the Appalachian Trail North, Maryland Heights and Loudon Heights.
Prince William Forest has 37 miles of beautiful hiking trails for its visitors to see! This park is the largest green space in the Washington, D.C. area. On top of the beautiful trails, there’s also campsites if you prefer a weekend away. This park is also full of Civil War history, as it was a strategic area the Confederate army hoped to control.
If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, consider staying at Cherry Hill near the Washington, D.C. area. This campsite has areas for tent camping, RV camping as well as cottages, yurts, and log cabins for rent. The campground also has 2 pools, playgrounds, dog parks and mini golf.
Mathews Arm Campground is located off of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This is Shenandoah National Park’s closest campground to the Washington, D.C. area. This campsite has great access to trails, including a trail that leads to a beautiful view of the 93-foot Overall Run Falls.
