Spend Quality Time with Dad on Father’s Day
There are an estimated 70 million dads across the United States. According to Pew Research , fathers today find it as challenging as women to balance work and family life, and want to play a more active role in their children’s lives. We honor these important figures in our lives every June on Father’s Day, a holiday created just for them. Although Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914, the idea of Father’s Day took a little longer to catch on. The general feeling back when the idea was first proposed in 1908 was that “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” A Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower and Civil War veteran disagreed with that opinion and worked to establish an equivalent of Mother’s Day for the fathers. Her idea slowly spread, but it wasn’t until 1972 that Father’s Day became an official holiday after a proclamation signed by Richard Nixon.
