Easter falls on Sunday, March 27th this year. To celebrate, there are many Easter events and celebrations taking place in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. areas over the next few weeks. The events include sunrise services, spring festivals, Easter breakfasts and brunches with the Easter Bunny along with egg hunts and rolls.

Every spring for the last 20 years, Butler’s Orchard in Germantown, Maryland has held “Bunnyland” , a spring festival with hayrides, egg hunts, pony rides, face painting, riding the giant slide, jumping in inflatables, riding pedal tractors, food, and baby animals. The festival runs for three weekends opening Saturday, March 19th with events going to Sunday, April 3rd.
The Maryland Zoo at Druid Park hosts the Mary Sue Candies Bunny Bonazoo March 25th to the 27th from 10 am to 2 pm. This family fun event has games, crafts, free egg hunts, puppet shows, live entertainment and of course, the zoo animals. The event is held rain or shine and is free with zoo admission.
Washington, D.C. plays hosts to many Easter events every year from sunrise services to egg rolls. If you do not have any specific plans, the museums along the National Mall are open on Easter, along with Mount Vernon Estate and Gardens, the National Zoo and The National Archives. Ticonderoga Farms in Chantilly, Virginia opens for the season with the Eggs-traordinary Spring Festival on March 21st with events running to April 5th. There will be a hayride, pedal cart tracks, giant slides, visiting with baby farm animals, face painting, a maze and much more. The festivities start at 11 am and 2 pm for the weekend events.
There are two major sunrise services taking place at famous landmarks in Washington, D.C. on Easter morning. Thousands of people gather at the Lincoln memorial for an inspirational sunrise service starting at 6:30 am. The annual Easter Sunrise Service at Arlington Cemetery will take place starting at 6:15 am at the Memorial Amphitheater. The non-denominational service includes the United States Army Band.
The two major Easter events in Washington D.C. actually take place on the day after Easter: The White House Egg Roll and the African American Family Celebration at the National Zoo. The White House Egg Roll is held every Easter Monday. This is the 138th year for the event, which is the longest running held annual presidential tradition. The first family hosts the White House Easter Egg Roll with celebrity and performers as special guests. Over 35,000 people are expected to gather on the South Lawn of the White House for this year’s Easter games. The theme of this year’s egg roll is “Let’s Celebrate”. There will be special music performances and celebrity storytelling, sports and fitness zones, cooking demonstrations, performances and the traditional egg hunt and egg roll. Tickets for the White House Egg Roll are free of charge and distributed only via an online lottery.
The National Zoo will host the Annual African American Family Celebration and Easter Monday Event on Monday, March 28th from 10 am to 4 pm. The programming for the day includes African storytelling, gospel choirs, reggae bands and more. There will also be an Easter Egg Hunt, crafts, games, a visit with the Easter Bunny and animal demonstrations throughout the day.
