While Earth Day officially occurs every year on April 22nd, you don’t have to wait until then to celebrate. All month long, both Washington, DC and Alexandria, VA offer a variety of Earth Day events—from educational seminars and fun entertainment to opportunities for you to dig in and help make a positive change in our environment. If you’re looking to get involved this Earth Day, consider spending the day at one of these events!
Saturday, April 13th
Back again this year, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is offering an Earth Day volunteer opportunity for people to help remove trash, litter and invasive plants from the gardens and other parks. Volunteers are asked to bring closed-toe shoes, a change of clothes water and sunscreen. This event will be held rain or shine, so please dress accordingly! Unable to make it? This organization does accept donations to help further their beautifications projects.
Saturday, April 20th
Help beautify the Butterfly Garden in Ward 7 this year by planting tulips! The goal of this project is to plant 500 tulips that will help to honor environmental stewardship and beautify the space. This project is put on by Chip’N and each volunteer will earn chips for every 1.5 hour session.
Sunday, April 28th
This year is the Fourth Annual Earth Day Plant Sale & Picnic! At this event, visitors are able to relax with a picnic in the gardens while enjoying the Earth Day celebration. There will also be plants for sale that can help further and protect your garden. Plant sale purchases help to fund conservation efforts and education at Tudor Place.
Celebrate Earth Day this year at the Alexandria Earth Day Festival! The festival will feature educational exhibits, demonstrations and hands-on activities and will kick off Saturday, April 27th at 10:00 a.m. and run until 2:00 p.m. the same day. The theme of the festival will be Climate Change – Take Action.
