Have you ever thought of riding your bike to work? Did you know that in the D.C. area, thousands of commuters actually already bike to work on a daily basis? This is because many of these commuters have recognized some of the key benefits of riding their bikes to work, such as:

If you haven’t already, now is the perfect time to get your bike out of storage and get ready for Bike to Work Day 2016 in Washington, D.C. This year, the event takes place on Friday, May 20th and offers a great opportunity for you to experience what biking to work is like. Managed by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in partnership with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), registration for the event is free and in recent years has grown by as much as 10 percent! In 2015 alone, over 17,500 people participated in Bike to Work Day in the Washington, D.C. area.

The 2016 event will feature 83 pit stops (up from 79 stops in 2015) throughout the D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas where refreshments will be served so you can take a quick break along your journey. You’ll enjoy a snack, some fun with other cyclists and chances to win some great prizes. When you register for the event in D.C., you’ll choose a pit stop where you’ll pick up your free t-shirt, and then you can continue on to one of the other many stops along the way.

Are you a little uneasy about your bicycling skills? WABA offers some classes and community rides for cyclists of all levels so you can gain more confidence about biking through the city, whether for the D.C. Bike to Work Day event or for future rides.

Bike to Work Day 2016 strives to support the D.C. region’s interest in bicycling as a valid means for commuting to and from work. This year, the event also kicks off The Really Big Bike Weekend, with Saturday, May 21st being the Tour de Fat and Sunday, May 22nd is the D.C. Bike Ride, where the roads will be cleared for a 17-mile ride to take in all the sights and sounds of Washington, D.C.
