Amazon HQ2: What Can we Expect from the Amazon Headquarters in Virginia?

If you haven’t heard, Amazon has recently announced they will be hosting their HQ2 in Northern Virginia, specifically, Arlington and Alexandria. This decision came after a yearlong across-country search, with over 200 cities competing for the spot. The long period of deliberation by the company eventually came to an end, with the initial plan being to split HQ2 between Virginia and Long Island City, Queens. Now, Amazon plans on focusing HQ2 solely in Northern Virginia.

The Benefits of Amazon Headquarters in Virginia

With the addition of the Amazon HQ2 in northern Virginia, it is expected that 400 new jobs will be created by the end of the year, with 25,000 new full-time jobs available over the next 10 years. Additionally, Amazon will invest $2.5 billion dollars and occupy 4 million square feet of space. The company promises that even those that live in other areas outside of northern Virginia will benefit from the new headquarters. There will be public transportation improvements, better access to Reagan National Airport and infrastructure updates.

Amazon Arlington Location Building Highlights

So, what can we expect from the new headquarters? Find a few key highlights below.

  • New retail and restaurants- There will be 50,000 square feet of new space for restaurants, shops and daycare for both residents to the area and Amazon employees.
  • Sustainable LEED Gold certified building- The buildings will be LEED certified and energy-efficient. The 2.1 million square feet buildings will also have green outdoor terraces for employees to work on.
  • Close access to public transportation- The company excepts many of their employees to commute to work by carpool, mass transit, bike or another alternative form of transportation. The headquarters is located nearby metro station, bus lines and a VRE station.

With the first phase of construction, Amazon plans to redevelop blocks of vacant warehouses into the two LEED Gold-certified buildings. There will also be areas for new retail stores and restaurants and open space for the community to use. The goal of developing this area is to create a campus for all of the workers and local area residents to enjoy.
