Summer is finally here, which means that it is time to celebrate all of the great food that the Maryland region has to share from bountiful fresh food to crab festivals to summer restaurant weeks. Always new food and drink to sample! Different cities in Maryland are known for their unique food festivals such as a roasted corn festival (in Westminster) to celebrations of craft beers.
Maryland is also becoming well known for its wine with over 50 wineries producing over 400 different wines . The wines are grown in 4 different areas of the state: piedmont plateau of Central Maryland, Eastern Shore, along the Chesapeake, Southern Plain in southern Maryland and Western Mountains, which has a shorter growing season, but produces great wines. The Maryland Wine Festival brings thousands of wine fans to Carroll County every September. There are many wine festivals throughout the summer that help celebrate local wineries.
The majority of the food and wine festivals are in June. Find out where you can taste great food and wine from Annapolis to Wheaton this summer in the following list.
The Annapolis Arts, Crafts and Wine Festival takes place June 6th and 7th at the Navy Marine Corps Stadium. Annapolis hosts many great food and wine festivals! Don’t miss the annual Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast on August 7th at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. It is all you can eat and drink. The Annapolis Green organization is working with the Annapolis Rotary Club to compost and recycle much of the waste from the event.
Another way to taste the region’s great food is to participate in restaurant week in your city. Restaurant week usually takes place twice a year, once after the holidays in early winter and the second time during the summer. Customers can sample the great food from fixed price menus for lunch and dinner. The menus will feature either two or three course meals and showcase various restaurants’ specialty dishes. Howard County’s restaurant week is July 20th to August 3rd. There will also be restaurant weeks in Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Alexandria. The dates for these events have yet to be determined.
