Lawn Equipment Storage Solutions

Summer lawn and garden equipment and tools require proper storage during the winter months. Preparing lawn equipment for winter storage will allow you to use them again in the spring with little or no additional effort. Lawn mowers, gardening equipment, and lawn trimmers can take up a lot of room when being stored in a garage or shed. It is important to properly prepare and have a good place to store lawn equipment for the off season.

Garden Tool Storage Ideas

There are a variety of great garden tool storage ideas that can easily be done to store your tools for the off-season. Garden tools should be cleaned and stored in a dry location. Tools such as shovels and rakes can be hung on a garage or shed wall for storage during the winter months. Bundle shovels, rakes and brooms together and store inside a garbage can. Smaller tools such as pruners and trowels should be cleaned and dried before storage. Store small lawn and garden equipment in plastic bins. Label the bins with the contents for easier retrieval during the spring. Before placing garden tools in storage, some will need periodic sharpening and oiling.

Consult with the owner’s manual for specific instructions for motorized lawn and garden equipment such as trimmers or edgers. Similar to lawn mowers, these items should be drained of fluids.

Properly storing garden hoses will help them last longer. Hose storage devices can help prevent kinking and minimize sun damage. A wall-mounted hose bracket or hook will allow for easy storage on a wall in the garage. Another great garden tool storage idea is to have a hose reel with a crank which will allow you to easily wind up the hose for storage. Then wheel the hose reel into a garage or storage unit for the off-season.

Lawn Mower Storage Tips

One of the largest piece of lawn equipment that needs to be stored during the winter is a lawn mower. If you follow the proper lawn mower storage tips, your lawn mower will be in great working order for the spring.  Before placing in storage, examine the lawn mower for any damage or needed repairs.  If the mower is damaged, ask yourself if the item is worth repairing. If the lawn mower is beyond repair, then dispose of the item according to manufacturer’s instructions.  Always check with the manufacturer’s instructions before you perform any cleaning or storing of your lawn mower.

It is important to properly clean the lawn mower before placing in storage. The blades should be cleaned of excess dirt, grass or leaves. Remove and sharpen the mower blades. Empty the gas tank before placing it in storage for the winter months. Never store any equipment with combustible contents such as gasoline. Change the oil and replace the air filter as recommended by the manufacturer.  Check the spark plugs to see if they need to be replaced.  Some people prefer to disconnect the batteries of power equipment to avoid drainage. Store the battery in a cool, dry place within your storage unit.  Place cardboard or a plastic tarp on the ground when storing a lawn mower, then cover with a breathable canvas tarp.

Renting a self storage unit for storing lawn and garden equipment for the winter is a great household storage solution when there is no room to store at home. Doing so will help free up space in the garage for other items that will be needed during the winter months, like a snow blower and snow shovels.
