Stevenson University is a private independent liberal arts college and university located in Baltimore County, Maryland. There are two campuses: Stevenson and Owings Mills. Stevenson University was founded in 1947 by the Roman Catholic Sisters of Notre Dame as a 1 year school to train women to become medical secretaries. The school was named Villa Julie College until 2008, when the name was changed to Stevenson University after Robert Stevenson, a prominent Baltimore grain merchant who married Deborah Owings, the granddaughter of the founder of Owings Mills. The college has made major changes over the decades including becoming co-educational in 1972 and expanding to a 4 year college. Currently, there are over 4,000 students attending Stevenson University.
Stevenson University offers bachelor degrees in 30 areas of study. They also offer 9 bachelor degrees for working adults who can attend classes online or on campus. Currently, there are 8 graduate studies programs. Originally Stevenson University was considered a consumer college for local residents, but as the college grew, more students wanted to live on campus. In the late 1990’s, Stevenson University started a major expansion project including adding a campus in Owings Mills in 2004 where there are residential buildings, a student union, and a dining hall. With the newer campus and residence halls being built in Owings Mills, currently over 2,000 students now live on campus with over half of these students being freshman.
