About Bowie State University


Bowie State University is a public university located in Bowie, Maryland in Prince George’s county. The school was founded in 1865 as the Baltimore Association for the Moral & Educational Improvement of Colored People, but was known as the Baltimore Normal School. The mission of the school at the time was to train African Americans to become teachers.  It is the oldest historically black institution of higher education in the state of Maryland. When the school moved from Baltimore to Bowie in the early 1900’s, the name changed to Maryland Normal School. The school became a part of the University System of Maryland in 1963 and changed the name to Bowie State College. Today, the school is called Bowie State University. The university is home to the Maryland Center, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1998 that provides community services.  Currently, the school has over 5,500 students and an academic staff of over 400. Bowie State University has 4 colleges: Arts & Sciences, Business, Education and Professional Studies. They offer over 40 undergraduate majors and a variety of post graduate programs.

The campus of Bowie State University is located in Bowie, Maryland close to both Baltimore and Washington D.C. The campus is set on 338 acres with a mixture of 24 newer and historic buildings. The Student Union Building, built in 2013, is the newest building on campus. The oldest building on campus is Harriet Tubman Hall, one of the 7 resident halls on campus. Approximately one quarter of the student population resides on campus in the residence halls.

  3. Select the autopay option.
  4. Once completed, you will receive an email with your storage unit number and access code.
  5. To reduce person-to-person contact, don’t forget to bring your own lock. Don’t already have a lock? No problem you can stop by the rental office to buy one on your first visit!
