Towson University is a public university located in Baltimore County, Maryland. It was founded in 1866 as the Maryland State Normal School to educate teachers. The campus was originally located in West Baltimore and moved to Towson, Maryland in 1912. The school went through many name changes and was finally named Towson University in 1997.  Towson University is one of the largest public universities in Maryland. The school is known for its education department and today graduates the most teachers of any university in Maryland. Towson University has over 23,000 students with the about 19,000 students being undergraduates.  

Towson University has 8 different schools or colleges offering 64 undergraduate majors, 37 master degree programs and 4 doctoral programs from liberal arts to business to education.  The campus of Towson University, located in Towson, Maryland, is 328 acres. The campus has a mixture of older and newer buildings and is committed to sustainability. Towson University created a campus master plan in 2003 for growing enrollment and updating and constructing new buildings.

The majority of freshman, 77%, live on campus. There are fifteen residence halls on campus including high-rise towers, apartment complexes and two-three story residential buildings. The residence halls and dining halls all take part in the campus sustainability projects by promoting recycling, green dining and environmental responsibility.
