Naval Academy students are officers in training and are referred to as midshipmen. The first year students are called plebes. Students receive full tuition to the academy with service time to the Navy after graduation. Service time varies depending on the type of specialty the student has selected. Pilots require a longer service time than engineering students. Students must apply to the Naval Academy as well as receive a nomination from a member of Congress (or be a child of a Medal of Honor recipient). About The Naval Academy
The United States Naval Academy is a four year co-educational federal service academy located in Annapolis, Maryland. The academy was established in 1845 under Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft. It is the second oldest of the five service academies and provides higher education and training for officers for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The establishment of the Naval Academy replaced the Philadelphia Naval Asylum in Philadelphia that was the first naval academy from 1834 to 1845. There are currently 4,576 students at the Naval Academy. The students at the Naval Academy receive a bachelor of science along with their commission upon graduation. The program at the academy focuses on “integrity, honor and mutual respect based on moral values, of respect for human dignity, respect for honesty and respect for the property of others.” The Naval Academy became co-educational in 1976 and today, 22% of the entering class is female.
The Naval Academy is located on the grounds of the former Fort Severn at the joining of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. The entire 338 acre campus is a national landmark with many historic buildings and monuments. The largest building on campus is Bancroft Hall, which is also the largest college dormitory in the world. The dormitory houses all midshipmen for the school. There are many buildings housing offices, classrooms, research areas, and libraries on campus. The Naval Academy Chapel is the center of campus and the high dome can be seen throughout Annapolis.
